Newtons
Newtons is a beloved cookie brand known for its soft, chewy texture and unique fig filling. These treats have a rich history dating back to their invention in the 1890s at the Kennedy Biscuit Works in Boston. The brand was named after the city of Newton, Massachusetts, rather than the physicist Sir Isaac Newton, as many might assume.
James Hazen, the plant manager at Kennedy Biscuit Works, had a practice of naming products after surrounding towns, which is how Fig Newtons got their name. Their invention was made possible by the invention of the cookie extrusion press in 1891.
Over the years, the Newtons brand has undergone several changes, including a shift in name and flavors. In 2012, the company rebranded to "Newtons," dropping the "Fig" from the name to emphasize the variety of fruit fillings available. This change aimed to modernize the brand and draw attention to flavors beyond fig, such as apple, strawberry, and raspberry.
Today, Newtons are a popular snack choice, offering a delicious blend of fruit and cookies that has stood the test of time. People of all ages enjoy them for their delightful taste and the nostalgic memories they evoke.
