Swedish Fish
Swedish Fish is a famous candy brand for its fish-shaped, chewy candies. It was developed by the Swedish confectionery company Malaco in the late 1950s, specifically for the U.S. and Canadian markets, and it quickly became a favorite in the U.S. candy scene.
The candies are technically wine gums, a type of gummy candy. They come in a variety of flavors, including the traditional "red" flavor, as well as green, orange, and yellow. Swedish Fish are vegan and are often considered a healthier option than other gummy candies that contain gelatin derived from animal tissues.
The brand has expanded over the years to include various flavors and forms, such as Tropical Swedish Fish, with passion fruit and piña colada flavors, and the vaguer "Beachy Punch." Additionally, it has inspired other Swedish Fish-flavored foods and drinks and even appeared in popular culture, such as in Candy Crush Saga.
In Sweden, the fish-shaped wine gums are called "pastellfiskar," which translates to "pale-colored fishes," and Malaco distributes them. Mondelez now owns the Swedish Fish brand in the U.S., and its popularity continues to grow, with new flavors and collaborations being introduced to the market.
