Necco Candy
Necco Candy, most notably famous for its assortment of Necco Wafers and Chocolate Wafers, is now owned by the Spangler Candy Company.
The original company, New England Confectionery Company (Necco), was founded in 1847 and was the oldest continuously operating candy company in the United States until its closure in 2018. After Necco's closure, the Spangler Candy Company purchased the rights to produce Necco Wafers and other products, reintroducing them to the market in 2020.
Necco Wafers have a unique history, rooted in the Civil War era when soldiers carried them as a portable and durable energy source. Over time, the product evolved to include a variety of flavors, such as lemon, lime, orange, clove, cinnamon, wintergreen, licorice, and chocolate.
These original candy wafers contain sugar, corn syrup, and various flavors. Their distinctive texture has been a hallmark of the brand for generations.
In 2018, Necco faced financial difficulties and was eventually sold to the Spangler Candy Company. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the brand's future, Spangler's acquisition and subsequent reintroduction of Necco Wafers in 2020 was met with enthusiasm from fans of the classic candy.
Spangler Candy Company has a history of producing well-known candies, such as Dum Dum lollipops and Circus Peanuts, and their commitment to maintaining the quality and tradition of Necco Wafers has been well-received by consumers.
The revival of Necco Wafers under the Spangler Candy Company is a testament to the brand's enduring appeal and products. With a history of over a century, Necco Candy has become a beloved part of American confectionery culture.
Continuing the brand under Spangler's ownership ensures that future generations can experience the unique flavors and textures that have made Necco Wafers a favorite for many years.
